99. Critically Speaking

Kay McFadden

Resume: President, Television Critics Association; chief television critic, Seattle Times
Age: "From Bachelor Father to Desperate Housewives"

It's always energizing to meet someone who loves their job, and clearly, Kay McFadden does. As a television critic for the Seattle Times and two-term president of the TCA, asking McFadden about television is like asking a bee about honey.

Her tenure at TCA has been marked by increased cooperation with cable, and this year she actually participated in NCTA's annual TCA press tour planning meeting. And while cable still has a ways to go to, this industry's presence at TCA (not to mention its buzz factor) has increased dramatically under McFadden.

As she says, "When it comes to cable, critics' reviews can have more of an impact, partly because the programming is typically edgier and requires more of an introduction. Plus there's the sorting out process for readers or viewers. We're like human threshing machines."

Biggest Challenge For Cable: An activist White House and Congress that are going to keep us on our toes on obscenity issues, ownership caps, digital regulations and spectrum spats. (All this and programming, too.)
Just Read: "Alexander Hamilton," by Ron Chernow
Who Would You Like to Play You in the Movies? "Rupert Everett (I want good looks and a sympathetic point of view)."
Professional lnspiration: "Ted Turner (Clearly, the key to a long, productive and interesting life is to be an iconoclast.)"

Favorite Adage: "The dogs bark, but the caravan passes on"
Best Advice Received: "If you do what you've always done, you'll get what you've always gotten"
Favorite Hobby: "Singing"

One Thing I'd Change About Cable: "Make it a la carte"
