CABLE WORLD STAFF
Greg Moyer was one of the first guys to sign on at Discovery Channel, joining the nascent network some six weeks after it launched in 1985. Over the years Moyer wore a lot of hats and, in his role as programming chief, helped guide both Discovery and sister service TLC through their formative stages. He was a champion of original programming and an enthusiastic purveyor of international co-productions.
But Moyer, most recently chief creative officer at Discovery Communications Inc. and president of Discovery Themed Entertainment, is bagging Bethesda, Md., for the Big Apple where he will become president of regional programming for Cablevision Systems Corp.'s Rainbow Media Holdings.
At Rainbow he'll direct operations, planning and business development for Rainbow's regional programming unit, encompassing News 12 Networks, Rainbow Sports and the three New York-area networks launched last August under the MSG Metro Channels banner.
"I am so impressed by the strategic direction that Cablevision is taking with its regional businesses, including those that extend beyond television," said Moyer. "I've always wanted to work in New York at some point in my career and I'm extremely happy to be part of a multimedia company that has made a terrific start toward redefining the regional television model."
Moyer, whose last day at Discovery is Jan. 22 , will relocate his family to the New York Metro area early this summer.
Original cable productions continued to score with viewers as TNT's Purgatory registered a 6.6 rating Jan. 10, the network's second highest-rated original production. A&E's first original movie, Murder in a Small Town, registered a 3.5 rating for its Jan. 10 premiere.
USA Network is picking up five movies from sister company Universal Pictures: Out of Sight, Bride of Chucky, BASEketball, Black Dog and Dragonheart II. Blockbuster will begin carrying Showtime original movies.
And Debra Green, SVP-affiliate relations at E!, is leaving the network to form her on consulting firm. Former E! chief Lee Masters has been named chairman of TCI Music.
Promoters have postponed the Jan. 23 George Foreman-Larry Holmes PPV fight.
