CABLE WORLD STAFF

AOL Time Warner stayed busy last week announcing new appointments and fending off rumors of widespread layoffs. At midday Thursday, shares of AOL traded at $49.75, up 96 cents, or 2%.

Yahoo!, among the most active stocks traded Thursday, was up 12% to $33.87 on speculation it would make a good merger partner with an old-line media firm.

The softening ad market claimed another victim, and NBCi said it will cut 30% of its staff due to a revenue shortfall.

In the broader market, indices held gains despite mixed earnings reports. The Nasdaq Composite Index popped 85.46, or 3%, to 2,786.24 near Thursday's market close.
