Mayors and Music The U.S. Conference of Mayors and Americans for the Arts honored VH1's Save the Music Foundation last week during the Fourth Annual Mayors Arts Gala. Save The Music received an award from the group for excellence in youth arts programs.
The Save the Music Foundation was founded to improve the quality of music programs in American schools by donating instruments and promoting the importance of music participation. VH1 created the group in 1997 and has since donated more than $10 million worth of musical instruments to 500 public schools. The group's goal is to bring music participation to 1 million kids in the next 10 years.
VH1 president John Sykes accepted the award.
"We are very pleased to honor John Sykes and the VH1 Save the Music Foundation, who have stepped up to fill a huge need for children across the country," Americans for the Arts president Robert Lynch said.
President Bill Clinton was also honored by the group for Lifetime Achievement for Leadership in the Arts, and U.S. Rep. Norman Dicks, D-Wash., received an award for Congressional arts leadership.
