The 15th annual conference of the Cable & Telecommunications Association for Marketing (CTAM) will be in San Francisco from July 18-20 with a focus on new technologies and products affecting the industry. Called "The Summit '99, Where the Industry is Going," the four-day meeting is expected to draw some 2,500 participants for a wide variety of workshops and, panels, according to Char Beales, CTAM president/CEO.
"We chose San Francisco because it is the cutting edge city in the United States where we will encounter the origins of high tech, a focus of this year's Summit," Beales said.
Keynote speakers are Joseph J. Collins, chairman/CEO, Time Warner Cable (who has been tapped by CTAM's board of directors as the winner of its 1999 Grand TAM Award); and Jill Elikan Barad, chairman/CEO, Mattel Inc. She is one of only two women at the helm of a Fortune 500 company. Two marketing campaigns, one for A&E Networks' Biography series and the other for Discovery Communications' Shark Week, will be inducted into the CTAM Hall of Fame. The marketing campaigns were selected by committee.
Most of the action will be at the San Francisco Marriott Hotel. Members of CTAM who register before June 6 will pay $720; after June 6, the price is $795. It covers the general sessions with featured speakers along with a wide range of courses ranging from high-speed Internet, cable marketing skills and strategies and international marketing. In addition, there will be 11 three-and-one-half hour Master Classes on digital technology, product development and marketing on the Web priced at $125 each.
"The Summit will focus heavily on new products and services, but we haven't forgotten CTAM's dedication to more traditional marketing strategies," said Dan Davids, EVP/GM of the History Channel and co-chair of the Summit with Louis A. Borrelli, Jr. CTAM board member and former EVP/CEO of Marcus Cable Company, L.P.
One of the innovations at this year's CTAM gathering will be live chat rooms, held July 20 from 11:30 am-2:30 p.m. They are designed for attendees to network and exchange ideas with colleagues on specific issues.
Another innovation will be seven weekend tours offered in the Bay Area July 17 and July 18. Exclusive to attendees, the trips include a wine country tour, tasting and lunch conducted by the Culinary Institute from America; a visit to coastal Marin County for a nature walk where giant redwoods flourish and then on to the galleries and shops of Sausalito. Each outing is priced differently and registration for the outings is required.
The Summit will close with a panel called, "A 360 (degree) View of the Digital World." Confirmed speakers include Geraldine Laybourne, chairman/ CEO, Oxygen Media Inc.; Lee Masters, president/CEO, Liberty Digital; James Murdoch, president, News America Digital Publishing; Fred Nichols, chairman, CEO/president of TCA Cable TV Inc. and Steve Perlman, co-founder, WebTV.
