CABLE WORLD STAFF

LOSING IS WINNING: Shares of Comcast Corp.'s Class A and Special shares rose last week after the MSO announced it was stepping back from the bidding war with AT&T Corp. for MediaOne Group. Comcast's Class A shares rose 16% from the previous week to $73.31 a share May 5 and its Special shares jumped 16% to $75.59. AT&T will get the bulk of MediaOne's assets, but Comcast will get control of up to 2 million additional customers, $1.5 billion in a break up fee and a tony telephony deal.

Shares of rose although Comcast may sell some or all of its shares to help pay for the AT&T systems it'll buy. 's stock closed May 5 at $154.94, up 8% from the prior week.

EchoStar Communications Corp.'s stock fell after DirecTV said it will offer customers local broadcast signals later this year. EchoStar's stock closed May 5 at $88.50, down 22% from last week.
