AOL and HBO Share Goodwill With Turner

CHRISTOPHER SCHULTZ

Turner Broadcasting's AOL Time Warner corporate siblings, America Online and HBO, will sponsor the Goodwill Games in Brisbane, Australia, in August, Turner said last week. Turner Network Television will show a total of 120 hours of Goodwill gaming, comprising 14 sports. In a display of corporate synergy, TNT's 12 days of programming will be peppered by promotions of America Online. Before the Games begin, AOL will sponsor Goodwill Games-themed ?vignettes? airing on TNT, TBS Superstation, CNN, CNN Headline News and CNN/SI ? all Turner properties. (Sports Illustrated, a Time Inc. publication and therefore a print unit of AOL Time Warner, also will promote America Online, as will USA Today, Gannett's crown jewel.) For its part, HBO will use the sponsorship to promote its original miniseries, Band of Brothers, the World War II tribute molded by the cinematic hands of Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, due out September 9. A two-minute trailer for Band of Brothers will air during the games, which, Chris Eames, SVP-sponsorship and marketing, Turner Sports Sales, says ?afford numerous opportunities for cross-promotion.?
