CABLE MAKES MONEY FOR ITS PARTNERS

Utilities, construction, information, real estate and finance and insurance are some of the sectors that benefited from the $42 billion that flowed to firms supplying goods to the cable industry last year. That's just one finding in an economic impact survey of the cable industry sponsored by Daniels & Associates and conducted by Bortz Media & Sports Group. It also notes the cable industry accounted for 1.1 million jobs in 2002, double the number in 1990. Over that period, cable accounted for 3% of U.S. job growth.

EXPLORER BOXES LEAD WAY TO UPBEAT Q4

Scientific-Atlanta's Explorer 8000 boosted the vendor's fourth quarter; S-A shipped 158,000 of the high-end boxes, as well as 58,000 HD boxes. The company posted a 15% year-over-year revenue increase for its subscriber products division, which includes set-tops and cable modems. Bookings increased a healthy 35%, to $459 million; Cablevision accounted for 40% of new bookings. S-A posted net income of $47.4 million, or 31 cents a share, above analysts' estimates of 19 cents a share. In the same period last year S-A saw a net loss of $15.7 million.

S&P CUTS CHARTER'S CREDIT RATINGS

Charter's $1.7 billion refinancing plan drew cheers from investors, but not from credit ratings agency Standard & Poor's, which cut its ratings on the debt-laden operator. Separately, Charter announced members of its Midwest operating team under Lee Clayton, SVP of the division. The new team includes Thom Anema, VP of business operations; Tom Gorman, VP of engineering; David Harris, VP of marketing; Clare Huspeni, VP of customer care; Margaret Lejuste, VP of government affairs and franchise relations; Abby Pfeiffer, VP of human resources; Christopher Scurto, VP of Charter Business Networks; and Paul Sly, VP of advertising sales.
