Building Musical Diversity

Mike Reynolds

What do cellist Yo Yo Ma and a tribe of Kalahari Bushmen have in common? They'll both appear on the International Channel this summer.

IC will offer 54 shows under the World Music Tour banner in August, spanning such genres as classical, opera, ballet and jazz.

Among the featured performers: The Chieftains in China; Mikhail Baryshnikov's production of Don Quixote performed by the American Ballet Theatre; Elvis Costello; and a film based on cellist Yo Yo Ma's journey to meet a tribe of Kalahari Bushmen at the Namibian/Botswanian border.

"International Channel has the unique opportunity to showcase some of the world's most impressive musicians performing in beautiful locations from around the globe," says Kent Rice, president/ CEO of International Channel Networks. "We have put together a schedule that includes household names, as well as some of the music world's most exciting new talent. It is truly the world class programming our viewers have come to expect."

IC affiliates who earn the most points by implementing tune-in tactics will be eligible for various prizes, including a Mediterranean cruise.

Meanwhile, IC has added TV Russia Network to its suite of digital language networks which are aimed at Chinese, Arabic, Scandanavian and Japanese viewers. TVR features programming in Russian and English from three of Russia's largest broadcasters - ORT (the nation's national broadcast company), RTR (Russia's state TV and radio broadcaster) and TV6 (the country's fourth-largest broadcaster). The schedule encompasses news roundups, press reviews, talk and game shows, kids programming, travelogues and documentaries.

"Approximately 3 million Russians live in the United States, and that number is expected to increase over the next five years," notes Scott Wheeler, SVP-network development. "TVR provides this growing population and their rapidly growing businesses with something that was not available to them before - easy access to in-language programming that addresses their needs."
