The volume turned up for ReplayTV last week when Time Warner Cable selected the company to conduct a test of its digital recording technology in conjunction with TWC's service in southern California.
The companies will initiate a six-month video-on-demand trial starting in August that will tap 500 Time Warner subscribers in the west San Fernando Valley. TWC is conducting other VOD tests in the Honolulu, Austin, Texas, and Tampa, Fla. markets.
Test customers in California will receive free Replay set-top boxes that will afford them control over live TV, as well as ReplayZones, which enable networks to highlight their program offerings in 10 different categories. ReplayTV automatically searches, finds and records programs for playback at any time. Viewers can also create personal channels based on themes or shows.
"We believe the use of ReplayTV digital video recorders has a great potential to increase pay-per-view revenues and the purchase of premium content services ..." says Tom Feige, President-Los Angeles Division, Time Warner Communications.
Time Warner is an investor in ReplayTV, while its soon-to-be parent AOL has the largest stake in Replay rival TiVo.
