Wall Street Overkill

CABLE WORLD STAFF

Being an analyst isn't easy. Pressure to pick winners has sent many analysts to their psychoanalysts. But now, Wall Street analysts have their lives to worry about as well. Some analysts are complaining about death threats after downgrading certain companies.

One Lazard, Freres analyst got a message recently that threatened "a golf club to the head." Other Wall Street analysts say they, too, have received violent threats. Although a bit unnerving, most analysts pin the warnings on inexperienced investors who typically don't understand how the market works.

Receiving antagonistic mail or phone calls from irate investors isn't new, the analysts say.

However, the increase in violent threats moved the SEC last week to pass a new law requiring financial firms to disclose the risks associated with the stock market.

In the meantime, analysts are unlisting their phone numbers in droves and screening calls carefully. Let's all be careful out there.
