SURVEY: MORE USERS LEANING TOWARD DSL

Cable had better get its marketing machine in high gear if it's going to keep its high-speed Internet advantage over the telcos. According to a new J.D. Power & Associates study, more consumers presently using dial-up to get online are looking to zip up their browsing experiences via DSL, rather than cable. In areas where both services are on offer, 52% of those surveyed say they would choose DSL, while 38% would opt for cable. The No. 1 factor in choosing an HSD service? Price.

DIRECTV, NDS PUT ONGOING LEGAL SKIRMISH ON HOLD

DirecTV and NDS Group, engaged in an intellectual property dispute, have told their respective lawyers to go home and rest a spell, pending closure of the News Corp. deal to snatch up the DBS firm's parent company, Hughes Electronics. The deal is expected to close by the end of the year. Once the i's are dotted and the t's are crossed, ?all claims and counterclaims alleged therein, will be dismissed with prejudice,? NDS and DirecTV said in a joint statement.

DOCSIS MODEM SHIPMENTS TOP 3 MILLION IN Q2

Worldwide DOCSIS cable modem shipments topped the 3 million mark for the first time, climbing 5.9% from the first quarter of 2003. Scientific-Atlanta showed the most dramatic growth, zooming 57.9% to 270,000 units, followed by Terayon, which increased 21.3% to 282,000. Industry leader Motorola showed the least amount of growth, increasing 4.2% to 1.05 million. Toshiba was the only major modem manufacturer to show a regression, dropping 20.3% to 350,000.

OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW FOR WORLDGATE

WorldGate Communications is getting out of the ITV business. The financially plagued company announced it will sell off some $3 million in assets to TVGateway as a means of jump-starting a move toward recrafting itself as a provider of videophone tech. WorldGate president Gerard Kunkel will resign and staff reductions are expected.

SCOPUS RAISES $15.5M

Scopus Network Technologies, an Israel-based digital compression company, announced it has raised $15.5 million in a second round of venture capital funding led by Genesis Partners. Yair Shoham, general partner at Genesis Partners, will be joining the board of Scopus later in the year, the tech firm said.
