CABLE WORLD STAFF
CBS Cable's The Nashville Network, which has been trying to spiff up its programming to lure those all important young, male viewers instead of the displaced Hee-Haw crowd, is ditching several of its country-music talk/variety and news series.
Such TNN standards as Prime Time Country with Gary Chapman, Crook & Chase, Crook & Chase Tonight and This Week in Country Music will go off the air in December as the network revamps its programming slate by shifting its emphasis from country-music and lifestyle fare to more fun stuff like wrestling and RollerJam.
TNN says it'll give a sneak peek of its new programming lineup in September.
"CBS Cable continues its deep commitment to country entertainment. CMT (sister network Country Music Television) will continue to be our country-music mainstay, while TNN is taking steps to broaden its appeal to attract greater audience share through new and diverse programming," TNN president David Hall said in a prepared statement.
So it seems. TNN already has acquired 38 flicks that it'll use for a Thursday primetime movie package, set to kick-off Sept. 30.
It also has created a male-targeted Friday-night block that currently includes WSL RollerJam, Professional Bull Riders Championship Rodeo and Motor Madness. And starting Aug. 27, its Friday-night schedule will include a one-hour weekly wrestling series from Extreme Championship Wrestling.
