Lycos Starts Online Music Sales

K.C. Neel

Lycos' music Internet site has begun selling downloaded versions of music from various BMG Entertainment recording artists, such as Santana and Christina Aguilera.

Lycos says it's the first Web site to implement a digital download program developed by BMG, a unit of German media conglomerate Bertelsmann AG.

The site is charging between $1.98 and $3.49 for singles and between $9.98 and $14.98 for full-length albums. Double albums will cost between $11.98 and $20.98, according to BMG.

Downloaded music over the Internet has been a controversial issue for months as services such as Napster, which allow users to download music for free, have proliferated.

The BMG music downloads are compatible with SDMI (Secure Digital Music Initiative) format players, rather than MP3, BMG says. SDMI is a digital recorded music format that was developed by the recording, consumer electronics and Internet service provider industries to prevent copying downloaded music.

More than 100 albums and singles, as well as background information about the artists, are available at Lycos Music, and the companies say the catalog is expected to expand over time.
