CABLE WORLD STAFF
Upon opening the media kit for FX Networks original thriller The Sight, we're greeted with an unexpected sound byte of a young girl's voice: "Can you help me?"
Sure, this cute scare tactic made us jump, but nothing could prepare us for the horror involved with The Sight's protagonist, Andrew (Pretty In Pink) McCarthy. Mr. McCarthy stars as Michael Lewis, an American architect sent to Britain to refurbish an old London hotel. He soon realizes he has a special gift of seeing strange visions and uses this newfound ability to help the hotel's 21 restless spirits while inadvertently getting involved with a serial killer.
The film's various London locations provide spooks-a-plenty; alas, it's hard to believe that an architect can do battle with a brooding serial killer. Pencils, compasses and rulers make awkward weapons. Fortunately, The Sight allows McCarthy to track the killer through the 1950s-style buildings he's so fond of. And when he does meet up with the child-slaughtering sicko in a maze-like sewer, he gets his ass kicked. Real good. Thumbs up!
"We are seeking a high level of quality with our original films, and we certainly think this one fits the bill," says Peter Liguori, president, FX Networks.
He may be on to something. FX's first, ahem, stab into original films, Deliberate Intent, premiered in August to earn a network-high household rating of 2.4. But unless there's an unknown cult of Andrew McCarthy fans still lingering out there in their parachute pants, it's a distinct possibility that The Sight could remain relatively unseen when it premieres Oct. 29.
