Sunshine Pens Wireless Deal

MIKE REYNOLDS

Sunshine Network has wired a deal with a wireless company for its 10 p.m. regional sports news show.

As part of a multifaceted marketing alliance, Nextel now entitles Nextel Florida Sports News, the weeknight program hosted by Barry Milligan and Tom Block centering on pro, college and high school results and sports news throughout Florida.

Jim Liberatore, corporate VP/GM of Sunshine Network, which reaches 5.2 million homes in the state, values the two-year pact with Nextel "at almost seven figures annually."

The multi-level sponsorship package, the most comprehensive in the regional sports network's history, includes not only entitlement benefits, but also a wide-ranging marketing alliance featuring print, radio and outdoor advertising, Internet and on-air promotions, and tie-ins with Nextel charities.

Liberatore says the deal covers a spot in the first break of the news report, as well as units during game coverage.

DOCUMENTARY DELIVERY OlympuSAT has acquired an equity interest in The Documentary Channel. The West Palm Beach, Fla.-based packager and distributor of independent networks will include the 24-hour network devoted to independent documentarians on its OlympuSAT 1 platform, slated to launch in January. The platform will also incorporate GoodLife TV Network, FamilyNet, and B Mania, Canal Sur, Puma TV, Cine Latino, TV Chile and Latin TV.

SHEEPISH SAGA Cartoon Network will bow its latest original series, Sheep in the Big City, Nov. 17. Created by Mo Willems, the half-hour show sardonically chronicles the story of a sheep on the, er, lam, who has been forced to flee the farm for urban life because a Top Secret Military Organization is chasing him.

DISTRIBUTION DEALS International Channel will nearly double its distribution base in Seattle by year's end through an arrangement with local broadcaster KBCB. The multi-ethnic network will add 410,000 homes to lift its total to 850,000 in the DMA. International Channel and KBCB will combine programming that will air on Channel 14 in most of the Seattle market. However, some viewers will continue to view the network on channels 19, 46 and 47 on AT&T Broadband systems.
