EDITOR'S LETTER

New Year's Wish List

Well, welcome to a New Year. If I had my wishes for 2003, they would be that this is the year when:

* The economy straightens up, and workers can invest their money and watch their savings grow.

* We all overlook at least one insult without replying in kind.

* MTV wakes up to the fact that children and teenagers don't need to hear a steady diet of expletives on The Osbournes. This is not reality. It's the language we try to teach our kids not to use. MTV should be ashamed to run The Osbournes, and we should be ashamed to carry it on our systems, or watch it.

* Cable operators and owners suddenly realize that programming rates should go down instead of up. Especially because the programmers have begun to advertise heavily on their own channels. Operators ought to be charging the programmers for providing them the platform to sell everything from automobiles to after-shave.

* The industry recognizes that system managers and marketing people may be a dime a dozen, but a good certified cable technician or engineer is hard to find and, once found, deserves a fair slice of the pie, too.

* The government will acknowledge that passage of a Homeland Security Bill should not alleviate the FBI, CIA and every division of our Justice Department of their responsibility to protect America against acts of aggression.

* There will be less "no-fault" anything, and juries who represent our best hope at justice will be less swayed by high-priced lawyers and idiotic arguments.

* More members of the SCTE will vote in this year's election to select the best for our regional directorships.

* Someone will locate translation software into the Internet so that I can chat with someone in a foreign country, in English, and they can read it in their native language. And vice versa!

* We finally decide to properly pay our teachers to mold the minds of our kids, instead of wasting millions to build new sports stadiums or pay for an athlete to live like a prince.

* They finally find that goat herder, Ben 'Hidin' and bring him to justice.

* Everyone makes an effort to support the completion of The Cable Center and its ongoing needs.

* I get to see three of my friends receive a job promotion and salary increase.

* Finally, I get to once again say; "The years just keep getting better!"
