Heaven Can't Wait: Church Recruits Priests on MTV

CABLE WORLD STAFF

It has come to this: the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence R.I. is looking to a recruit a few good men via MTV and the Internet (www.catholicpriest.com).

Indeed, market research showed one of the best places to reach young males is MTV, although the diocese said it plans to run ads on Comedy Central and cable sports networks as well.

The Rev. Marcel Taillon said he came up with the idea after asking high school students how the church could better reach teens. "They said, 'We do two things, father. We surf the net and we watch cable," Taillon said.

Apparently the ads are producing results. "One guy said, 'The number was right on the screen so I figured it was time to call.,'" Taillon said. While other dioceses have run TV ads, the Providence diocese is the first to specifically target audiences of MTV and cable networks, according to Father Taillon.
