AGAINST THE WIND: The Kagan Cable MSO Average weathered the storm that hit the general markets last week after Brazil devalued its currency and the country's central bank president resigned. The Kagan MSO rose 50.58 points from the previous week to 3,854.85 Jan. 13. At the same time, the Dow Jones Industrial Average slipped 195.41 points to 9,349.56.

On the heels of strong sales during the holiday season, shares of Shop At Home Inc. and Valuevision International Inc. rose last week 33% and 17%, respectively. Shop At Home's shares closed Jan. 13 at $10.75 and ValueVision's stock closed at $8.44 a share.

Analysts' bullish prospects for Scientific-Atlanta Inc., coupled with the company's announcement that it's shipping digital set-tops to three Cox Communications' systems, helped buoy S-A's shares last week to $28.44 a share, up 21% from the previous week.
