The Disney Channel took top honors in Beta Research Corp'.s 1999 survey of most popular networks among non-cable subscribers.
The Syosset, N.Y., pollster's results for 1999, supplied by Turner Classic Movies, rank the Disney Channel as the top mid-sized network in cable, with 52% of the people surveyed indicating high interest for the entertainment channel.
Survey participants were asked to rank the networks on an interest scale of 1 to 5. The History Channel placed second with 48%, while Turner Classic Movies came in third with 39%. Others in the top 10 included TV Land, 34%; Comedy Central, 33%; Animal Planet, 33%; Home and Garden Television, 31%; Cartoon Network, 31%; Sci-Fi Channel, 30% and WGN, 30%
Disney also reigned supreme in the emerging networks category, with 34% of those surveyed indicating a 4 or 5 interest rating for Toon Disney. America's Health Network came in second with 29%, and Romance Classics third with 24%. The rest of the top 10 pack included Independent Film Channel, 23%; the Outdoor Channel and ESPNews, both at 19%; ZDTV, ESPN Classic and MuchMusic, each at 18%; and CNN Sports Illustrated, 17%.
Demographic breakdowns had similar results. Among men, the History Channel vaulted over Disney for the number-one slot, with 55% of men surveyed rating it a 4 or 5 in interest. Disney came in second at 43%.
Women, however, placed Disney number one with a whopping 60% ranking it high in interest. Turner Classic Movies came in second among women with 42%.
In the key adult age 18-34 demographic, Disney again took the top spot with 60% of young adults rating it high in interest.
