Cisco Systems Inc. thinks it has a way to help operators speed the cable modem and digital set-top box installation process.
The networking powerhouse last week unveiled a subscriber registration center (SRC) that it said will help lower the cost of getting data to customers by speeding up the process.
"It's a self-installation system, but it's unique in a number of different ways," said Gregg Lebovitz, Cisco's product manager.
The system uses lightweight directory access protocol (LDAP), an International Standards Organization (ISO) standard derivative developed for telephone directories on line.
"It really is a very flexible hierarchical database that allows information to be stored by not only the users of the system, but also by all the devices," Lebovitz said. "It's a common place to put the information so you can map device information directly into consumer information."
The system also integrates with the operator's subscriber billing and management system.
The SRC, he said, "allows network administrators to lay out the configuration of what the network looks like and how the cable modem needs to be configured based on its location, its physical parameters, and also allows subscribers to select different services and to take that into account so the modem gets configured to support those services automatically."
