MediaOne Inc. has given up its 50/50 management control of Time Warner Entertainment Inc. and Time Warner Inc. will consolidate the TWE assets in its third-quarter earnings. Some watchers said last week the move is just another administrative step in AT&T's acquisition of MediaOne. Other observers said it's the first hop toward AT&T and Time Warner coming to terms over which assets AT&T will own after the MediaOne merger is complete. AT&T BIS president Leo Hindery has said he doesn't want to own Time Warner's programming assets, but he intends to keep his stake in Time Warner. AT&T could end up taking a piece of Time Warner's cable operations only.
