In an effort to build its presence as a supplier of interactive entertainment, Excite last week said it'll acquire online games service Pogo.com. Excite will operate Pogo as a subsidiary, while the games company will continue to provide and distribute co-branded services to other companies. Excite says it will use Pogo's technology to create high-speed games and will reinforce Pogo's existing strategy of providing games across a variety of platforms. The company already has a long-term content partnership with Pogo and a 10% equity investment in the company. "Games have proven to be a key method of attracting and acquiring customers and ultimately in securing user loyalty in a powerful, broad demographic online," says Byron Smith, EVP-consumer broadband services.
