Safety First: Palace Pugilism

CABLE WORLD STAFF

Break out the earmuffs and the codpiece. Ear-chomper Mike Tyson is venturing back into the pay-per-view arena Oct. 20 in a 10-round battle against Andrew Golota, a Warsaw bruiser with a predilection for below-the-belt blows.

Showtime Event Television will air the 10-round battle, set for The Palace Of Auburn Hills (suburban Detroit). The bout, carrying a suggested retail of $49.95, marks Tyson's first return to PPV since his January 1999 KO over Frans Botha, which generated about 700,000 buys.

Iron Mike was slated to appear on PPV against his latest victim, Lou Savarese, in April, but that fight eventually aired on Showtime following a rate-card rhubarb with In Demand. After what has been a slow year for PPV boxing, the Tyson-Golota tussle could make for a solid one-two combination in the fourth quarter with TVKO's Lennox Lewis/David Tua championship bout scheduled Nov. 11.
