By the end of the year, only 1.2 million cable subscribers are likely to have installed the equipment necessary to view hi-def programs. But cable operators have recently become re-enthused about hi-def, with the expectation that providing HD programming will help them fend off competition from DBS rivals. With MSO interest percolating again, the number of subscribers getting HD could quintuple to 7.7 million in just two years, and more than double again to 19.7 million by 2007. The NCTA calculates that 60 million households in the U.S. are able to get HD from their local cable companies.
