In an odd twist of fate, World Wrestling Federation Entertainment has become a real contender in the pursuit of buying the World Championship Wrestling organization. Speculation swirled around Mandalay Sports Entertainment as a likely buyer, but the company issued a statement last week denying any interest in the WCW. Many sources familiar with the situation feel the successful WWFE isn't a real player to snatch the ailing WCW from Turner. Others say it could be the opportunity of a lifetime for both wrestling organizations to tag-team on numerous pay-per-view events in the future.
If Mandalay became WCW's king, it would've been in charge of a company that has been fighting a losing battle to WWFE while racking up millions in lost revenue.
The WCW did the "post-Olympic swing" through Sydney, Brisbane and Melbourne, Australia, Oct. 7-14, which is one reason why a WCW sale has not happened sooner. Two shows in Sydney and Melbourne recorded sell-out shows with healthy ticket sales encroaching near-capacity crowds for the remaining dates.
"We are thrilled that our Australian fans will experience the live adrenaline rush of WCW," says Sharon Sidello, VP-WCW international development.
According to various sources, WWFE rushed into the option to match any WCW purchase price as part of a settlement reached earlier in the year with TBS that involves copyright-infringement accusations.
