Technology often is tantamount to increases in speed, but Discovery HD Theater chief Clint Stinchcomb is using his high-tech channel to urge subscribers to sit still for a whole two hours on Friday nights in October and November. The reason? He's presenting a unique television event: world-class musicians, opera stars and ballet dancers in a series of BBC-produced arts specials in glorious 1080i HD and 5.1 surround sound.
The slow-down theme applies particularly well to arts programs, where typically there's relatively little motion on screen. The generally static picture allows viewers to appreciate HD's depth even more, Stinchcomb says. Best of all, the performances are gems, including the lineup for Oct. 22: opera stars Cecilia Bartoli and Bryn Terfel in recital with the London Philharmonic and Gustav Mahler's gigantic Symphony #8, with Sir Simon Rattle conducting some 800 musicians and singers.
