Unlike the Presidential race, there was a clear-cut winner among those watching elections results on cable: CNN.
The battles for primetime, extended prime and total day all went in CNN's column Nov. 7.
CNN posted a 4.7 average from 8-11 p.m. that night, translating into 3.73 million households and 5.82 million viewers. That compares with a 3.2 rating, 1.96 million households and 2.96 million viewers for MSNBC.
Fox News Channel, which has been making significant Nielsen strides of late and which tied CNN in average primetime rating in October, finished third with a 2.8 rating, 1.54 million households and 2.41 million viewers.
But FNC's coverage was simulcast on Fox's broadcast network. A spokesman says combined viewership was 7.1 million viewers.
During the total day period spanning 6 a.m.- 3 a.m., CNN again scored more combined viewers than its competitors, averaging 2.61 million viewers, from 1.85 million households and a 2.3 average.
MSNBC recorded a 1.5, 915,000 households and 1.3 million total viewers, versus a 1.4, 773,000 households and 1.05 million viewers for FNC.
n The New York Yankees reached a one-year, $52-million rights agreement with International Management Group for the 2001 season. Cablevision Systems' Madison Square Garden Network under its 12-year, $493-million contract that expired with the 2000 campaign, has the right to match the deal this week.
n Scientific-Atlanta is integrating Microsoft TV into its Explorer 6000 set-top boxes. It had been using the PowerTV operating system. Separately, president/CEO Jim McDonald is adding the title of chairman. He's succeeding James Napier.
n Terayon Communication Systems launched BandLeader, a new end-to-end VoIP platform for cable operators to transport carrier-class voice services over large-scale hybrid fiber coax networks.
n House Telecommunications Subcommittee chairman Rep. Billy Tauzin, R-La., will investigate presidential election coverage by the major cable- and broadcast-news networks.
