House Telecommunications Subcommittee Chairman Billy Tauzin, R-La., called off a hearing to examine the actions of broadcast and cable news networks on election night.
The network incorrectly predicted Florida's electoral votes would go to Vice President Al Gore, then changed that prediction to favor Texas Gov. George W. Bush before eventually conceding the count was too close to call.
Tauzin, who is gunning for the Commerce Committee Chairmanship, called off the hearing in order to give House members a chance to calm down following a contentious election process, spokesman Ken Johnson says.
"There's too much volatility going on right now," Johnson says. "We don't want to throw fuel to the fire."
He adds that Congress' lame-duck session likely will recess until Dec. 5 before finishing appropriations bills.
"No one's going to be in town for a hearing anyway," Johnson says.
