Showcasing the Future

Karen Brown

CableNet '99, the annual educational showcase sponsored by the California Cable Television Association and CableLabs Inc., will be leaping outside the box to show what cutting edge technology it will offer cable customers in the near future - particularly in home networking.

With the theme "Outside the Box" the display will focus on the applications that may soon be available in the average household through interoperable cable modems, digital set-top boxes and other home networking hardware available at retail. With about 10,000 square-feet of display area, the showcase will include more than 100 demonstrations with 70 companies featuring products in a "no-sell" environment.

Products include high-definition television, home networks linked by ordinary phone lines, IP telephony, Internet and e-mail functions through digital set-top boxes, video conferencing, e-commerce and a host of other applications.

The key to all is the interoperability of the hardware, something CableLabs has focused on with its DOCSIS, OpenCable and PacketCable initiatives.

Companies supporting the CableNet display with in-kind services are Cisco Systems Inc., CommScope Inc., Gilbert Engineering Co. Inc., MediaOne Group, Mountain Cable Industries Inc., PPC, TeleCrafter, Arris Interactive, Lucent Technologies, Nortel Networks Corp., Road Runner, Sharp Electronics Corp., TeleWire Supply and Thomson Consumer Electronics.
